Sorn Hard Rock Aggregates Quarry

Sorn Quarry is a hard rock aggregates quarry near the East Ayrshire village of Sorn. The quarry contains two mineral types, granodiorite and metamorphosed sandstone separated by a poor quality doleritic dyke. The metamorphosed sandstone has a high polishing resistance and is worked separately for high skid resistance aggregates used in road surfacing.

Sorn Quarry Extension

ASH design + assessment was appointed by the operator to prepare a planning application for a major extension of the quarry involving a full Environmental Impact Assessment and the preparation of an Environmental Statement.

Based upon geological data provided by the operator, ASH devised an extraction scheme that would permit separate but contemporaneous working of the two mineral types. Schemes were also prepared to introduce planting that reduced the visual impact of the quarry and to encourage the ultimate restoration of the site to a mixture of rough grazing and wildlife habitat.

Ecological and noise studies were commissioned by ASH and incorporated into the assessment and statement. All other topics were covered in-house.

The planning application submitted to East Ayrshire Council for the Sorn Hard Rock Aggregates Quarry extension was successful.
