Upper Forth Crossing and East Link

The Scottish Goverment has been developing proposals to improve the road network within and around the village of Kincardine, Fife in order to reduce the high volumes of traffic and relieve the traffic congestion that this settlement currently experiences.

As part of the solution, a new bridge crossing of the Firth of Forth upstream of the existing bridge and a link road to bypass Kincardine for north and west-bound traffic are being constructed. The other part of the solution, now completed, was the creation of a new Eastern Link to accommodate eastbound traffic.

Upper Forth Crossing and East Link Route Selection

ASH design + assessment was commissioned by Jacobs to:

  • Assist in the route selection process
  • Carry out landscape and visual impact appraisals
  • Put forward outline landscape mitigation proposals for both parts of the scheme

ASH has also overseen the successful implementation of the landscape elements of the Eastern Link.

Environmental Impact Assessment

An environmental impact assessment of the various route options against the scheme objectives and the impacts on key environmental features was undertaken. The outcome of this comparative assessment was that the best environmental solution to the region's traffic problems consisted of a new crossing at Kincardine, upstream of the existing bridge.

The final stage of environmental assessment has now been undertaken specifically for the preferred route in accordance with guidance from the Scottish Goverment as set out in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) Volume 11.
