What we did

ASH was commissioned to design and implement all the external works for the Motorway Service Area (MSA) at Johnstonebridge, on the A74(M) in Dumfries and Galloway.

ASH undertook a careful review of other MSA sites and developed a very site specific landscape design to fulfil the clients brief to achieve a highly unique ‘Flagship’ project integrating the major commercial development into the dramatic Scottish Borders landscape.

The site was chosen to take advantage of local landform which allowed the design of an unobtrusive motorway access, well screened lorry parking and the siting of the amenity buildings to give long views up the Annandale Valley.

The carefully selected location of the site; the priority given to the environmental considerations in the masterplanning of the facility and the decision by Texaco to make the MSA a 'Flagship' project has resulted in a highly unique, high quality development well integrated with the local landscape.

Key features include a large artificial loch and a central courtyard with descending waterfalls.
