We provide environmental support to grid connection and transmission infrastructure projects
ASH work with transmission operators and developers providing environmental assessment services in the development of new grid connections and the reinforcement of existing transmission infrastructure. This has included carrying out environmental appraisals to review the implications of potential routes for overhead line or underground cables and options for potential new electricity substation sites.
Energy Distribution and Transmission
Our role in these projects spans the whole development process, from inception / feasibility, through options appraisal, screening / scoping, site layout and iteration, environmental assessment and site implementation.
We have also been involved in the environmental appraisal and submission for substation planning applications, such as the approved Fetteresso Substation in Aberdeenshire (which will serve to connect the consented Mid Hill Wind Farm to the national grid) and Berryburn Substation in Moray (which will serve to connect the consented Berry Burn Wind Farm to the national grid).
Other substation submissions have been the result of grid re-enforcement requirements such as Crossaig (Kintyre), Knocknagael (Inverness-shire), Shin (Sutherland) and Dounreay (Caithness).
ASH have been retained to draft and co-ordinate construction environment management documents and landscape mitigation proposals (such as mounding and planting) to satisfy planning conditions for a number of these developments, as well as providing on-site advice and support as appropriate. We are currently providing such on-site monitoring and environmental advice for Fetteresso Substation, Connagil Substation, Strath Halladale to Dallangwell overhead line and Sloy Switching Station.
Grid Connection Projects
Farigaig Substation and Dunmaglass and Corriegarth Grid Connections
ASH co-ordinated the Environmental Appraisals and undertook the LVIA for Farigaig substation and associated wind farm grid connections
Connagill Substation
ASH coordinated environmental studies and provided environmental compliance advice during the construction of Connagill Substation
Berryburn Substation
ASH prepared the Environmental Appraisal for a substation to connect Berryburn Wind Farm to the National Grid.
Sloy Switching Station
ASH undertook environmental appraisal and landscape design for conversion of the Sloy Switching Station.
Kintyre to Hunterston
ASH adopted a landscape approach to identify alternative routes for the reinforcement of the Kintyre to Hunterston transmission network.
NE 400kV Reinforcement
ASH co-ordinated the EIA for the planned reinforcement works to the North East transmission network.
Melgarve Substation
ASH was commissioned to co-ordinate the Environmental Appraisal for Melgarve Substation.
Shin Substation
ASH provided landscape and environmental support and advice for the Shin Substation extension.
Quoich to Aberchalder
ASH undertook an environmental assessment for a new 132kV wood pole line between Quoich and Aberchalder.
Strath Halladale to Dallangwell
ASH undertook environmental studies for the Strath Halladale to Dallangwell overhead line.
Sloy to Inveraray
ASH worked as project environmental advisors for the Sloy to Inveraray 132kV Line reinforcement.
