We represent clients as expert witness at public inquiries, parliamentary inquiries and planning appeals
ASH has a long and respected history of representing clients as expert witness in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This has been in the capacity of our core expertise of landscape and visual assessment and generally has followed on from earlier involvement in the inception, design and assessment of particular projects.
Such projects have ranged from transportation infrastructure, through housing, to renewable energy (wind farms); conventional energy (a CCGT power station); and unconventional energy (a coal bed methane extraction development).
Expert Witness Services
Landscape and visual effects are frequently centre-stage in public inquiries and often we are required to not only accompany the reporter or inspector on site inspections as part of the inquiry process to provide clarification and information as requested, but also to compile the route and viewpoints to be examined.
Our confidence in the witness stand is founded upon long experience and a thorough knowledge of our subjects, the site and study area in question and the particular issues arising from the development, combined with robust and proven methodologies. These methodologies are constantly reviewed in the light of changing best practice principles and have been exhaustively tried and tested in the public arena.
Occasionally we have accepted the challenge of standing-in as expert witness by clients where the original assessor is not able to give evidence for various reasons and often at short notice, necessitating rapid assimilation of often complex desk and field-based data and updating, augmenting or amending the original studies, as required.
We often produce in-house graphic material for inquiries to illustrate and support precognitions. Proofs of evidence, and sometimes additional surveys, such as residential amenity studies, are frequently requested.
Rebuttals to objections are also requested periodically and again we are familiar with this requirement. We are used to working as part of a team and comfortable with, and responsive to, the demands placed upon us by our clients, QCs and advocates alike. Our approach is always thorough and professional.
